Focus on Adolescents – Conference in Kiel Places Emphasis on More Participation
Growing up is challenging. The long winding road to adulthood (J.J. Arnett 2004) is paved with obstacles as well as appealing attractions. It is marked by rising expectations of parents and institutions and implemented with various risks.
The conference in Kiel named several crucial challenges along this way – for adolescents as well as for professionals and institutions of youth welfare services. It worked out participation as a basic component in tackling those developing tasks. However, it is not yet in practice.
Adolescents from a peer research project reported on participation as a dynamic process which has to be newly arranged every day.
The main lectures focussed on the topic from different perspectives and enlarged participation with structural and legal aspects.
The workshops added their perspectives of participation methodologically relating to risk assessment, counselling services and work with school absenteeism.
Futher topics were opportunities and risks of digital media.
The conference ended with an interactive comparative presentation of the workshop results and a discussion about the future work with adolescents.
