Child Protection in Rural Areas: New Child Protection Centre in Ostholstein-Segeberg

The Child Protection Centre in Ostholstein-Segeberg (Schleswig-Holstein) has taken up work affirming and following the knowledge and experiences of the Child Protection Centres. It is now the forth Child Protection Centre in the German Federal Land Schleswig-Holstein.

What does successful child protection in rural areas need? That was the central question of the pilot project “Child Protection in Rural Areas” in 2012 in which the Child Protection Centres analysed local conditions at five places all over Germany in order to improve the further development.

This is also the aim of the new Child Protection Centre: to reach and attend children, adolescents and families from the north of Fehmarn down to the middle of Schleswig-Holstein in rural regions and to make professional help available faster covering a larger area. Furthermore, the new centre also targets at raising the awareness of violence against children.

The Child Protection Centres will accompany the work of the new service institution in a three year pilot phase. The idea is to develop better concepts for child protection in rural areas on the basis of local demands. Thereby child protection in Schleswig-Holstein will become professionally better qualified and the gaps in coverage will be diminished.
